Taking into consideration the recent extension of the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for solar, the horizon of incentives in Massachusetts broadens even further. In addition to the state-specific incentives and programs available in MA, you will still get an additional discount of up to 26% on the total cost of your PV solar energy system thanks to this great government subsidy. Keep in mind that the ITC applies only to those who buy their PV system outright (either with a cash purchase or solar loan).
Massachusetts Solar Incentives
In addition to the 30% Federal Tax Credit, solar incentives available to Massachusetts residents can greatly reduce the cost of going green.
One of Massachusetts’ most exciting solar developments is the SMART program. With this incentive, the State of Massachusetts pays Eversource, National Grid, and Until customers a fixed rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) of solar energy produced for 10-years. For systems under 25 kilowatts (kW), the rate ranges from 29 to 31 cents per kWh, depending upon your location and utility. For comparison, the regular retail rate in MA is closer to 20 cents, indicating large savings from the SMART incentives.
When solar homeowners receive bill credits from their utility for the energy they are sending back to the grid, they are benefiting from one of the best incentives in solar - net metering. Though there have been several net-metering battles in Massachusetts, this incentive is still available for now so make sure you cash in on it.
This new, innovative state-level incentive allows residential homeowners to own a solar PV system by making fixed, low-interest loan payments. This financing program is a major reason for solar’s rising popularity in Massachusetts where legislators wanted to incentivize homeowners to get the best value out of their solar panel installation - by owning it rather than getting into complex third-party ownership agreements.
Incentives for Residential Carports
The Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) is offering a rebate on the purchase of a Level 2 charging station. Up to $500 for a networked, or “smart” charging station, and $100 for a non-networked station.
The Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (MassEVIP) provides grants for 60% of the cost of Level 1 or Level 2 charging equipment installed at multi-unit dwellings (MUD) up to $50,000. Eligible entities include private, public, or non-profit MUDs with ten or more residential units.
Eversource is offering to manage and cover all the related cost of the implementation of the infrastructure that will connect to their customers’ chargers. This includes, but is not limited to trenching, a transformer (if deemed necessary), a dedicated service meter, panel(s) and all conduits and necessary wiring to support the approved number of charging stations. Infrastructure for up to ten Level 2 chargers can be put in place. Customers cover the cost of purchasing and installing the charging station(s).

“Sunlight Solar was great to work with throughout the entire process, including post-installation support. The installation process was extremely well done and the system has worked flawlessly from the beginning (nearly two years now).”
“I cannot say enough about how professional, competent and responsive sunlight solar is. I did a ton of research on solar and thanks to Green Newton I went with this company. Everything they said about price, timing, delivery and performance was true. Anytime I contact them they respond instantaneously. The people who work there are committed to the company, to the customer and to having a positive impact on the environment. And on top of all this, since November 2017 my system has generated more than projected resulting in month after month of no electric bills. I am not usually one who writes reviews or raves about performance but this company is special. Try them.”
“Customer service was excellent. The team was responsive, highly professional, and their attention to detail was fantastic. I initially had a problem initially with my array and they responded quickly to fix the problem. Would highly recommend the service. I also have been enjoying not having an electric bill seeing as how Fitchburg has an especially high charge per kilowatt. Please let me know if you’re interested in attaining their services and I will get you connected with the correct people and I will give you $100 of the referral fee as well.”
