Net Metering

meter

What happens if you produce more solar electricity than you use?

On or around the time your solar electric system is installed, the utility company will change your meter to a “net meter.”  The new meter has the capability of recording the meter spin both forwards and backwards.  It is commonly referred to as a “bi-directional” meter.

Your meter is still read monthly and the bill should show you exactly how much electricity you sent back to the grid and how much you purchased from the grid.

Each utility company has a different means of recording and crediting you if your electric meter spins backwards and goes below zero for the month. In any case, you will be credited for the electricity you sell back to the grid, either at the end of the month or the end of the year.

Please note, if you produced more electricity than you used, you will be still be charged a nominal service fee by the utility company.
